Decree of the Minister of Science, Education and People's Education, 1 June 1943. Subject: Summer holiday 1943. The Minister of the Reich has pointed out that, due to the considerable demand for coal, which must be additionally covered, even if the next winter should be colder than the previous one, the same amount of coal and coke can no longer be made available to schools as in previous years. In the event of persistent cold weather, it will not be possible to avoid the closure of schools in winter. In order to avoid that the lower school performance of our young people, which is already caused by war-related disturbances, is further reduced by the fact that, on the one hand, a long holiday period is maintained in the summer, and on the other hand, in the winter, valuable teaching time is lost due to coal holidays that are about to become necessary, I am looking to see to what extent, while respecting the necessary summer recovery time for the pupils, a reduction in the number of summer holidays is required. However, when determining the duration of the holidays, consideration must be given to the use of young people during harvest work, and provision must be made that, in the event of any need arising as a result of the division of the school holidays, no reduction of the youth from the harvest aid is made. 4 of my decree of 26 February 1943 - III a 200/43, II.a, II d(a) : concerning the duration of the vacation 1943, according to which the summer holidays should not be taken more than 12 days, I therefore agree. The review of the allocation of holidays must be carried out in close cooperation with the guides in order to bring the decisions to be taken into line with the overall needs of a Gauge area.
