5a - 2 - Reasons. I. To the person of the defendant. The defendant is the son of the Czech farmer Wenzel Beran and his wife Barbara née Krajsky. The paternal property covered about 6 hectares. After the visit of the folk= and citizen school, the defendant went through the agricultural technical school in Strako nitz. He became a member of the "Republican Party of Landwirte und Kleinbauern" (Agricultural Party) in the year l9o5. In this party he was first district secretary, later secretary general and from l933 he presides. As such he received a salary of 6oo crowns per month in respect of remunerations. After the dissolution and integration of the agricultural party into the Narodnt jednota (National Unitary Party) at the end of the year l938, the defendant became chairman of the party. The defendant was also chairman of "Novina" cooperative printing company, which was affiliated with the agricultural group. As chairman of this printing company he had a monthly salary of 1.50 crowns. In addition, he had 25 cooperative shares. The defendant also held the following unpaid honorary posts. Since l930, he has been chairman of the Association of Meloriation of Czech Agriculture in Bohemia, Chairman of the National Union of Welfare and the Control Finance Commission. Since the year l9l8 the defendant was a deputy of the Agrarpartei in the Czechoslovak parliament and in the period from 1 December 1938 to 1 May 1939 Czech Prime Minister. The defendant is married to Marie Pilar and has two children aged 24 and 22 years. His wife comes from a large agricultural estate and brought two million crowns into the marriage. The defendant owns in Milonowitz near Strakonitz a forest= and field estate in the size of about 240 hectares and in the value of about 2 1/2 million kroner, and also half a brewing right of the bourgeois brewery in Pilsen with a value of approximately 1 l/2 million konor. In addition, he owns various shares in the value of about 400 O00 kroner and about 800 000 kronor of cash assets invested in various banking institutions.
