Zl - 12 - where Czech lawyers and doctors were called, Czech schools were founded, and Germanism continued to push back. After the overthrow of 1918, all German schools were closed and German officials were dismissed or retired. The numerous Jews, who had known themselves as Germans externally until 1918, turned around and became main agitators against Germanism. Today Proßnitz counts about 1,3oo Germans. The German school system and the social care work are now again valid since the establishment of the Protectorate. L it t a u passed with one voice majority into Czech hands in 1899. Already before, 188o to 1899, a nationalistic struggle had begun, the sharpness of which was no longer achieved even after the 19i8 revolution. After the World War, the German thirteen-class school was confiscated; it then continued as a one-tier school. The shooting site, which had been hit by German citizens, was expropriated and the association dissolved. Whereas 188o lived in Lithuanian 2.49o Germans and 1.54o Czechs, in 1921 the number of Germans had fallen to 431, whereas those of Czechs had risen to 4.o65. When the Protectorate was established, there was a German school, a German children's garden and the German house. Today, Lithuania counts around Z7e Germans. The school was extended to two classes and the kindergarten was transferred to the NSv. L e i p n i k has always been a hotly contested ground and experienced hate demonstrations and activities from the Czech side already before the World War. Until 1918, a German mayor, who was removed during the overthrow of 1918 under deserted appearances of the Czechs and the ringing of the city's poor-lingle, took place during the Czech period a strong departure, especially the youth, so that today's remaining group of nearly 4oo Germans is greatly over-aged. The closing of the last German school on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the Czechisation Association "Národni Jednota" marked the Czech popular struggle.
