* - 2 - I. Basics and methods_of survey. L 1. Execution of survey. In January 1939 a survey of retail prices for food, heating materials and lighting and rental prices was carried out by the Arbeitswissenschaftliche Institut der Deutschen Arbeitsfront on behalf of the Reichskommissar für die sudeten- deutschen Gebieten in 2l0 Gemeinden des Sudetenland. In the Gau Sudetenland the investigations were carried out in 170, in the parts of the Sudete-German territories belonging to the Gauen Bayerische Ostmark and Oberdonau in each 9 and in the sudeten-German territory which came to Gau Niederdonau into 22 municipalities. The survey was carried out in such a way that the prices of food and heating materials were determined by specially trained employees of the Institute of Industrial Sciences in retail shops in the individual municipalities, and that the surveys should be carried out on workers' residential areas. At the same time, similar surveys were carried out in a number of municipalities in the Altreichs and Ostmark for comparative purposes. a retailer bought a product relatively low because it was still from an old Czech supply and because the low price was found when converting it to crowns in RM, this low price has been used as a price actually determined and paid by the consumer. The adjustment to the actual ratios had an impact on food prices, especially in the case of heating materials. In accordance with local conditions, either the prices for wood or lignite or coal had to be taken into account, for example. in the wood-rich areas of the Sudeten-German region belonging to the Gau Bayerische Ostmark in most cases coal prices were not at all to be found at all, whereas, for example, in the eastern Sudetgau no wood prices could be found. While a typical worker's apartment in the Old Kingdom is an apartment of two rooms and kitchen, in which Ostmark one of these can be considered by a room, cabinet and kitchen. In the Sudetenland, the kitchen can be regarded as a typical workers' apartment. Therefore, the rental prices for old and new kitchens were also determined. It was found that the housing conditions in the Sudetenland were extremely primitive.
