- 2 - Furthermore, as in the Old Kingdom until the takeover of power, there were a large number of youth movements, who had written in addition to their purely federal goals the care of the exercise of the body on their program. In this connexion are called the individual scout organizations and the so-called tramp associations. However, gymnastics and sports associations had the far decisive part to play in physical education. They were grouped together in the "Czechoslovak All-Sports Committee" and included organized associations of almost all sports. So he was a regular member: the Aero Club, the Athletics Association, the Autoclub, the Box-Amateur Association, The Ice Skating Association, Football Association, Horseback Association, Jokey Club, Amateur Swimmer Association, Fencing Association, Heavy Athletics Federation, Cycling Association, Rower Association, Sailing Association, Czechoslovak S o k o l community and many others. The extraordinary members were the University Sports Association, the Kegelverband, the Magyar Association for Body Care in Pressburg, the Jewish Sports Association "Svaz Makkaby v ČsR" and others the importance of the associations for Czech people's life. The importance of all these associations for the Czech people living cannot be assessed sufficiently. It can be seen from the numerical observation that almost every member of the Czech people belonged to one of these associations. A statistics of the gymnastics clubs from the year l936 shows, for example, that the "S o k o 1" had 79o 7oo members. In addition there are 165 o66 members of the workers' gymnasiums and l74 lo members of Catholic Body Education Association "o r e l". In this context it must be considered that a large number of Czechs belonged to several associations at the same time as members. Aside from the purely physical, these associations had a special social and political significance within the framework of the Czech state.
