82V - 2 - of the poor who had almost driven a permanent unemployment to despair. In the last 3 years the Sudetendeutsche Volkshilfe brought support for over 38,ooo.ooo Kc. for protection, i.e. over 28o.oOO Lstg. These needy workers have always been the most enthusiastic fighters of the left-wing parties - social democrats and communists - than the advocates of a better and more just distribution of the people's wealth. For years they had branded nationalism and everything related to it as the most common exploitation of the poor, the introduction of the mentioned "Czech cards had no small propagandist effect among them and was welcomed as the dawn of a new principle in the public support of the poorest classes. It is no wonder, therefore, that they noticed with indignation the effects of the Sudeten German People's Aid, which was supported by the SuDeten German Party. When efforts to ridicule this wonderfully devised and run-up welfare institution proved to be unsuccessful, attempts were made to eliminate alleged cases of discrimination in the distribution of the accumulated funds by means of legal measures. All these accusations proved to be unstoppable, however, and the steps taken against the SudetenGerman People's Aid made them only more popular among the SuDeten Germans. Instead of occasional "Czech cards" (to each l.s.4d.), the Sudeten German People's Aid took on their own help now, dressed their children, and distributed among them potato, flour, sugar coal, wood and other vital articles, in sufficient quantity to ease their plight. Rich and poor among the SuDEten Germans joined - workers, employees, civil servants and employers. Without any pressure from the outside, without "terror", the recipients of such aids could draw their own conclusions. They could not help but recognize the Kützxextg lack of support of the efforts of the German Social-Democrat Party - despite their cabinet minister - to improve the lot of the unemployed, and on the other hand they themselves felt the charitable effects of the Sudeten German People's Aid. That was the moment when in their party confession KaHwäkkknäXwik Häß became fluctuating towards the left parties. It was not only the material help, but even more often the sincere and unbiased compassion, dkk in which the help was given, which affected this heart of the Sudeten Germans most internally. This charitable activity in favour of the Arnes became the goal of planned attacks by the German left parties and Czech parties. It is therefore probably in place to consider the actual events, effects and countermeasures in a real Sudeten German town. We choose fishermen, many English people who visit the neighbouring Karlovy Vary well known. Fishermen have ........ inhabitants, of which % are Germans, the rest are Czechs (mostly state officials). While Karlovy Vary is a typical spa town, with pure air, clean roads and free of all fa- brik smoke, fishermen are quite similar to one of the many industrial towns in Central England. Numerous factories, mainly for porcelain and glass, employed a constantly growing number of workers until an unfavorable commercial policy and the economic crisis drove people from their jobs. In good times, the Social Democrats held undisputed domination over the working masses and the city council. They had great resources to carry out their work, and an excellent monument to their urban development is the huge "boy's home", which cost millions. The building was supposed to house 80 single people of both sexes, according to the type of Londo-n "Service Flats". Finally, the construction costs were so high that the required rents were too high, and many rooms remained empty that the city's interest service was heavily burdened. As unemployment increased, the social democracy in the city council was faced with the task of providing accommodation for many of the poorest working-class families.
