The Sudeten Germans have maintained an admirable discipline during these critical weeks. There have been incidents all this time, and we should thank Gat that he has not populated the southern regions with a passionate and easily erratic Latin race. It is unthinkable what Italians or Portuguese would have done in their place in the face of similar situations, but we have a thoughtful and hard, though very self-confident mass of Sudeten Germans in the much-needed area, who face the most unpleasant incidents with self-control. And yet some of the pactors spread terror and intimidation on the part of Häxxx of these Sudeten Germans. What are the real facts in place? Up to l933, the Sudetens Germans were divided into almost a dozen parties of different sizes. The German Social Democrats were the leading party for a number of years, especially after the World Wars, when the country was overshadowed by the so-called "Red Wave". Süäter gradually waned the general enthusiasm for Social Democracy, as it was proclaimed by Dr. Czech, then leader of the German Social Democrats and later Minister of Social Welfare. The change in general favor is best characterized by the number of votes that that party achieved in successive Czech municipal elections: House of Deputies - seats Senate - seats 0000 689.589 ...... 31 593.344 16 1925 ..... 411.365 ... 17 363.310 1929 506.761 ...... 21 446.940 11 1935 299.942 * 11 271.097 . a But diéser landslide does not stop. In the municipal elections, which took place on 22.5., 5. and 12.6.d.M. in three stages, the sozail democratic German votes fell catastrophically, as shown in the following paragraphs, which includes 50 of the most important and well-known Sudeten German places, such as Karlsbad,Gablonz, Hohenelbe, Brüx,Friedland,Leitmeritz,Reichenberg,Warnsdorf,Teplitz- Mgnneugyos 1919 .... 102.902 St. 1923 ..... 44.415 St. 1938 ..... 20.648 St. It is quite clear that this collapse had to cause an annoying sense of unrest among today's leaders of the German Social Democracy in the Czech Republic, and they had to find a scapegoat that you could blame for this decline, which will ultimately lead to their complete exclusion from public life in the Sudeten German territories. The Sudetendeut- ian party, under the leadership of Konrad Henlein, is the sole winner of the last public elections. Experts claim that about half of the German Social Democracy has turned to the Henlein party in the general elections. This happened, although Henlein could offer them nothing but his firm belief in the community of the Sudeten Germans, while the German Social Democracy could point to its cabinet minister, Dr. Czech, as the guardian of the social welfare system of the country, an office that could have provided valuable services in the fight against the damage of unemployment among the SuDeten Germans. Dr. Czech introduced a new type of food cards for the unemployed, which receive no other state support. These cards, short called "Czech cards", were issued at the nominal value of lo Kronen = approximately ls.4d., per week. The Henlein Party - based on the principle of the people's community, in contrast to the Marxist doctrine of the class struggle - was very soon able to achieve concrete results in social fields. It participated in the "Sudetendeutsche Volkshilfe", last winter food, clothing, firing and money support in the total value of l6,000.00oKc. (approximately ll2,000)
