- III - 2 men to handle properly, take care now in the above described stage sub-leaders and especially the boss not about his men, who now in their spare time alone depend on themselves, so it can lead to grudges of the worst kind and possibly even to desperation. Often, however, the lack of support for the men by their underleaders is not due to the absence of good will, but to the fact that the underleader does not know who to start it. One of my companies had experienced a very frequent change of boss in a very short time and it was difficult to acquire the trust of the men. After a short time I found out that the men also lacked the necessary good will to cooperate and they were reluctant to be involved in the service. Even today, in the 3. War year, I found the attitude that they wanted to continue their previously practiced civil profession under all circumstances, because they thought that they would stay in the police service for a maximum of one year. Then their business would still be in progress, they had their old customers and could pursue their profession carelessly. This opinion, which I heard several times in the evening, was either ignored or tolerated by the underleaders. Only a very open word on my part, that they could not at all think about taking off the uniform for the next 3-4 years and that they had to dominate the proposed areas of material (tactics, law, etc.) in their own interest, called for an inner end to the actual fighting to be carried out the occupation and de-valid pacification of these areas, brought these men to a reasonable view of service. (The successes of our police battalions in the East could offer the best opportunity to convince the men of the need for a reasonable view of service.) However, I do not receive such valuable suggestions for the leadership of men at first during this service, since the men believe that they are not able to or are not allowed to express such thoughts, however, such suggestions may arise in my opinion. Only if one talks with the Wm. about their needs and worries first after the end of service.
