0 -2 - I. The will to resist without doubt arises by no means always from the fanatical broadness to fight, but often from a reactionary defense. This defense against enemy attacks at Lende and from the air lacks any stronger faith in the future, it is a predominantly physical response on the basis of a terrifying dullness. This dullness of the soul and the soul also explains why in political and military action, which is often forced by the situation, there is often no foresight. The individual instinctively resists, but no longer recognizes a higher goal of struggle and has become so indifferent that he only does what is forced at the moment by the opponent. The lack of foresight and planning, the weakening of the sense of reality and the shocking appearances of headlessness, as well as in the West 1944/45, is everywhere observed in the south-east and east; the stubbornly mechanistic waiting for orders from higher departments, although it would have to be acted upon immediately; the often perceptible aversion to responsibility and the aversion, in the interest of the people and the kingdom, to act independently or to think reality-justly and therefore correctly - all these manifestations find their last explanation in that bitter docility, which takes away more and more the specific nature of its peculiarity and the reserves of its strength from the German point of view. It is in turn the result of some other processes. In revealing the reasons that led to this disastrous state, the following are especially emphasized by people's psychologically trained and politically reliable connoisseurs: 1. Despite enormous efforts, the German Empire lost the First World War because it began without a war goal and carried out without a clear political objective. In this world war we had a war aim from 1939 to 194l: the liberation of real folk life from the fetters of Bolshevik barbarism and capitalist bondage. But since we have not remained faithful to the idea of the liberation of peoples in the East, contrary to all expectations, the German people have gradually lost faith in a higher and more general goal, which goes beyond the defense of naked existence. More and more often one meets the claim that the Bolsheviks probably fight for a big goal, yes, that even the Americans and the English would have a /by the Pope in his last Christmas message legitimizing / aim - that only we Germans alone need to let our lives in battles or under the bomb terror without a clear final orientation. Wide circles of the German people are on the point of view that a war, which is only conducted to defend the existence of their own people, can no longer be won because the coalition of opponents cannot be broken up without the help of the European peoples. However, the help of other peoples on this side or on the other side of the fronts presupposes that we set a common political goal for the struggle. 2.
