Confidential. Document note. Mr. v.Gregory erg. Sohontd Prague, 23 March 1939. Subject :Activity of Dr. Benesch_in America. A few days ago, the director of the Mars publishing house, Simon, confidentially said that he had certain indications that Dr. Beme Benesch had either begun a strong anti-German activity in America or that he would do so soon. Dr. Benesch had expressed himself that he would have gone away in confidence because he/his country would ease the situation and maintain independence. This condition had also led him to declare that he no longer wanted to be politically active. But this had not been fulfilled and he would now work for the re-establishment of independence just as in 19l4 abroad. He would not only establish a maffia, but also a counter-government for the Tsch-Sl., and he was convinced, indeed he already knew that Ame rike, England France and Soviet Russia would assign this government. Mr. Simon thinks that the time when this would happen in public among the Czechs would cause a certain, under certain circumstances dangerous unrest and would have to be logical. If there were to be a declaration of war by the mentioned powers against. the German Reich, which Dr. Benesch reckons to be safe, this would also be a very critical moment for the peace in Bohemia. To preserve this would be the reg- gation Hacha out of the way and one measured then again to the old "Národní Ceský Vbor". .. vC- 3 39q 124.
