145 Absehrift ! EEEEEEESEEEEEIEEEEE -Untersturmführer Prag den 17.II.1940. Dr.Walter Günther Pra g II German Pathology 497 Subject: Description of the conditions in the rear-wandering camp of the Volhynia Germans in Böhm.-Leipa Sudetengau. Reference: o.B. Through the Gauärzteführer San.Rat Dr.Peitenhansl called to the section of two deceased children, I had the opportunity to get to know the relations in the repatriation camp Böhm.-Leipa. At the moment there is a flu epidemic in the camp especially among the children from 2 to 4 years, which manifests itself due to the particularly rapid and severe course of pneumonia. Within a short period of time, several (8) children and also their adults died of this disease. To determine the cause of this illness, they were asked for the opening of the corpses. They were already able to find out that the children were in a poor nutritional condition and therefore the pathogen of the disease had a particularly malignant effect. Then I was guided through the camp, because I was particularly interested in the social conditions. I would like to describe my impressions briefly: the camp houses l268 people, who are housed in several factory rooms. However, these rooms do not meet the pri- mitive requirements, which must be placed on a habitable space according to the present conditions. All rooms are occupied, so in a room l260 people, so that one person has about 5 cubic meters of airspace, while normally l5 cubic meters are necessary. Since it was led through the camp at night, I could particularly notice the lack of good air. People sleep very closely together,( a doctor with his 7-headed family e.g. on 4 square metres) -large,small,male,female - children often have to sleep lying down at the feet of the adults. In addition, the rooms are constantly heated by steam.
