Gicherheitsdienst Nff ff 24 SD-Leitsabteilung Prag Nr 22/43 Prag, the 23.02.1943. Tagesbericht (Strictly confidential, only for the personal service of the recipient) I. General situation and mood: In the discussions on the general war situation the speech of the Reich Minister Dr. Goebbels is still at the center of the interest of the German population. According to all the reports before us, it is considered to be of the greatest importance both in terms of the purely military side and in regard to the total mpbilization of the home front. The special interest which was expressed in this speech is shown by the observations that their repetition on Sunday was heard again by most of the people. It was said that at least in peace the whole speech could have been re-activated. Now one cannot resist the impression, also in the realization that the situation on the Eastern front had taken very threatening forms, that Goébbels had blackened things especially in the first part of his speech, when they were in virility to justify the announced measures. It is clear, however, that the war will take on a previously unknown hardness and that it will probably not only be the use of new, not yet known weapons, but as one wants to draw directly from a passage of the speech, the gas war will come. The main problem of the Minister's remarks was undoubtedly the reckless mobilization of all the workers at the disposal which had now become necessary. It was generally stated that these measures should have been implemented long ago and hoped that they would now at least be consistent and without regard to certain social groups.
