12a " -14- But the revolution broke out in Hungary in September on the old line. On 17 and 18 September Štúr, Hodža, Hurban, Štefanovič and Abaffy entered Slovak soil with about 500 armed volunteers at Vrbovec (Neutra county). They formed a National Council and quickly organized the fight against the Magyars and Kosuth Magyarons. In several battles the national troops were brave, but the whole expedition failed. Vienna and the dynasty failed according to their old traditions (unhonestly) and all hopes put into the Habsburgs failed. But the National Guards did much for the awakening of national consciousness in Slovakia, the Russians decided on the fate of the Magyars and after the revolution - the dynasty quickly gassed what good service the Slo-waken had rendered to it. The time of the provisionals, "deafness and stunnedness" came and almost also Štúr was under police supervision, Aüszeichnete nitionalé leaders were transferred, as far as they had entered the state service,: Francisci to Debretzan, Štefan Daxner to Sátoraljau- hely, Wilhelm Paulina to Keczkemét, Michal Bakuliny to Abauj- Szántóv, Jáh Jesenský to Balasz-Darmót. Štúr retired to Nodra and Hodža had to fight for his existence for a short time. In 1849, the Wie- ner government issued the so-called Turkish patent, which would regulate Protestant church affairs in a legal way. The regulative was not bad for - the Slovaks, but it seems, it was mainly left to the clergy to be separated nationally and the Magyars to be more occupied. The struggle against the independent unification of the Slovak Protestant churches into a whole began with great force, and it turned out again; that Vienna was powerless and perplexed, a year later the government already declared that the church patent did not have to be respected. And so - even these crumbs of a certain Slovak national right were thrown away useless. - 15 -
