Of course, the Czechs wanted to work against Frankfurt and sought to enforce their state-law demands. Soberly, the Stimne Dr. Fričs, who warned against too much zeal and a decision that could not be realized, because Slavism had no power and no weapons in its hands, demanded that Štúr form a confederation of Slavic peoples for mutual defence and, above all, the supremacy of Magyaran, the main thing was the independence of the Hungarian Slavs and the demarcation of their territory. Havliček supported Štúr's plan and: Dr. Dvořáček demanded that he become a volunteer against the Magyars immediately. Štír and Hurban were in favour of a determined action against the Hungarians, they were definitely worth against: indeterminate and diplomatic proposals by Šafařik. In teressant is and very instructive even for the present, that the determined and realistic Havliček, who did not get to know Slovakia and the Magyars, impressed the youthful action of Štúr and Hurban. To the experienced, Slovak weakness and the magic strength, before all the strength of the nobility known Slovak Šafařik the action did not work well. For this reason, Šafařik drew attention to the external political danger that would be evoked if the Austro-Hungarian Slavs proclaimed the Revolutiön and changed the unified Magyarian empire to eight to ten united federal small states. The foreign powers would protest against it or exploit the liberation of the empire for its benefit. It could really happen that in : Austria the German and in Hungary the magyar supremacy would be circled. Šafařik regarded the Slavs as not yet strong enough to such experiments, all the more, ai the Poles obviously sympathized with the Magyars (Tobolka: "The Slavic Congress in Prague in 1848", p. 110-115). -14 -
