Applicant frankly admits that he was planning to avoid returning to Czechoslovakia because of the worsening political situation. On the intervention of friends he was subsequently given permission by Home Office to remain and work here, and his parents were given visas to come to this country.

On 23.10.1948, with Ministry of Labour & National Service permission, applicant started work as a senior shipping clerk with Couper, Friend & Co. Ltd., 33/35, Eastcheap, E.C.3 and he was continuously engaged in that way until he left on 30.4.55 and started work on 16.5.55 in his present position as an administrative assistant in the European Department (Iberian Division) of the Shell Petroleum Co. Ltd., St. Helen's Court, Crosby Square, E.C.4. He receives a yearly salary of £1,000, and pays tax at source.

At the time of enquiry applicant had £500 invested in industrial shares, which, so far, have shown no return. He also had approximately £200 in an account with Barclays Bank Ltd., Marble Arch branch.

Applicant's parents were of independent means in Czechoslovakia but they had to sacrifice their home and assets in order to get permission to leave Czechoslovakia in 1948 and they are now fully maintained by applicant.

They live together in the upper part of premises over a shop at 23, Seymour Place, W. which were taken on a seven year's lease from 1950. The premises cost them £70.17.9 a quarter, and this sum includes the rent of £56.5.0 and general and water rates totalling £14.12.9.

Applicant and his parents live under clean respectable conditions, apparently within their means. Applicant declares himself to be entirely free from debt, and enquiries, so far as they are possible, have disclosed nothing to dispute that claim.

Applicant has an adequate knowledge of the English language.

He said that his reasons for applying for British naturalisation were that he has been here for eight years as a
