Subject: Hans Richter, "Talmud and Schulchan Aruch in the Non-Jewish Mirror". - Title of the work discussed: Talmud a Šulchan aruch v nežidovskén zrdcadle Vybral, přeložil a poznámkami opatřil Hanuš Richter - Na- kladatelství L.Mazač,_Praha II. (1942; SS.425.)- "Talmud and schulchan Aruk in the non-Jewish mirror - Selection, translation and notes by Hans Richter - Verlag L. Mazač, Prague II." The work is mainly a selection of doctrines from the sections of the Babylonian Talmud and the tracts of the Schulchan Aruch. The introduction includes a short, essentially correct treatise on the historical sources of the Jewish religion (SS.7-16) and a polemic against the mistaken view that today's Judaism no longer considers the talmúdisčhen etchings binding. - The selection of quotations is strictly in keeping with the arrangement and the headings of the above mentioned Talmud codification; it is only relatively rarely interrupted by references to other present Jewish religious literature, or comments and emphasis of the author. Also in the rendering of the doctrines of the Schulchan Aruch the classification of its 4 main sections is adhered to. (SS. 27 - 370). - The appendix is followed by some examples, taken from the Jewish prayers and the synagogal liturgy (S.S. 373 - 380) and a series of quotations from the newer Jewish press and Jewish works concerning Judaism and its world mission, entitled "Does the spirit of the Talmud still live?" (383 - 414). - To conclude: a very incomplete and inorganic bio- and bibliography of Jewish authors of all times, a list of works used and a table of contents according to chapters (SS. 415 - 425.) -
