247th Prague, 25 August 1942. 25th Protocol. Today, 12 o'clock at noon, President Hácha paid me an official visit, in which he said the following: He asked for an answer to the question whether the death sentences of the People's Court against Czechs, which had been executed in recent days, would be a one-off phenomenon, or whether further executions of protectorate members could be expected in the next few days. I explained to him that at a recent command of the leader, first of all, the People's Court against the members of the Czech resistance movement has been and will continue to take place, and that the execution of the death sentences has also been carried out by order of the leaders (after the attack on the leader of the upper group Hey-drich) and will be continued in the near future. It is therefore likely that there will be further death sentences as well as further executions in the near future, since unfortunately the number of members of the Czech resistance movement coming before the People's Court of Justice is a considerable one. The President then stated that, in his opinion, pardons from individual protectorates who were sentenced to death would be of the utmost importance to the Czech people, but in particular to the further pacification of the Protectorate and of those who belonged to the protectorates. He personally promises himself an extraordinary amount of such acts of grace, especially since the Czech people could derive from this, that even in the middle of the war grace will be granted before right and not simply without choice and thought. He asks for a re-examination of the present requests for grace, particularly for these reasons.
