From this broad general mood, however, already in the first days the Czech workers stood out by positive attitudes and opinions, which culminated in a - sometimes loving - recognition of Heydrich as a social reformer. and was variously strengthened by similar statements from the rural population. On the government side, the assassination caused total dismay and inconsistency. The German population took possession of the greatest arousal and indignation without exception, which, with laborious discipline, kept itself constantly in demand of sharpest retaliation measures. After the initial banning of any public declaration from the Czech side, continued with the 30th anniversary of the assassination. In May, under the leadership of Prime Minister Moravec and German guidance, a wave of propaganda was launched by the government, which mobilized Czech masses in large-scale demonstrations in all parts of the Pro- tektorate, under unprecedented proportions, with the Prague Wenceslas Square demonstration of 200,000 participants on 2 May. The death of Heydrich caused a strong feeling of hatred among the German population after an initial profound shock and called for the abolition of the Protectorate. With the Czechs already very frightened at this time, the news had a shock-like effect and brought a fear of further retaliatory measures that had not yet been observed to this extent. Voices of sincere compassion, however, were almost completely lacking.
