The Serenade (Notturno) for 4 orchestras, K.V. 286, was written in December 1776 in Salzburg for four times 2 violins, viola, bass and 2 horns, so four orchestras face each other. The serenade consists of an adante, an allegretto grazioso and a menuetto played by the trio - 2 violins, viola and bass - which was probably only composed by Mozart in Vienna. Köchel expresses the assumption that the serenades are actually unfinished and should be originally completed by a rondo. It is likely to represent a New Year's music for the year l777. The Serenade is based on a 3-fold echo effect. The first orchestra plays a melody, the second orchestra echoes with the second half of the melody played by the first orchestra.
