E.1 Under the title "We wish the Republic peace and peace within and outside" B e r a n published in the new year number l938 of the Ven- kov on 3rd page an article in which he advocates an association of all "state-building parties". In the article it says among other things: "Our understanding, especially with the Germans, must be honorable and honest on both sides. We must not overlook the branching of the German population in our country. If more than 14 million German voters have given their trust to the SaP in our democratic electoral rules, one must expect it and draw the necessary conclusions from it. Here one can only agree honestly. The Germans must recognize our state, they must be able to shiel at the border and give the possibility of representation, just as we must give the Germans what belongs to them in the administration of the state. It is not possible for all Germans, if they confess to a certain political side, to call themselves high traitors." But B e r a n writes a little further: "The members of all national minorities know with us that in moments of danger, the whole Czechoslovak nation stands together and is able to bleed to millions and die for the state and its freedom."
