(GEOPRESS.) G E O P R E S S No. 329 (40/68) October 1940 THE END OF A BRITISH MARIN ESTABLISHED POINT IN CHINA. On 1 October I940, the Japanese troops occupied the island of Liu-Kung-tao in the bay of Wei-hai-wei on behalf of the Chinese counter-government in Nanking. Thus, Great Britain loses the last .C remnant of its former lease area Wei-ha-wei. Dicses was leased from China to England in 1898 until the Russians occupied Port-årthur. Already l9o5 Russians lost Port-Arthur in the Russian-Japanese-Lschen War, but the Japans took their place, so that the British also remained in Wei-hai-wei. In the Washington l922 contract, the return to China was promised and in 1930, China was able to take possession of the lease area again. Only the island of Liu-Kung-tao, which dominates the entrance to the bay, remained as a naval establishment for more than a decade of British lease ownership. Despite the opinion of Great Britain that the lease agreement would be extant for a further ten years, the Japanese occupation of the island was now carried out - at the same time as the termination of the contract by the Nanking government. Explanation of the sign: I=Border of the former (until l93o) British lease agreement Wei-hai-wei. 2(black area)= the island of Liu-Kung-tao,bis l.i0.l940 British lease area. 3= Yellow sea. (GEOPRESS.)
