G EO PR E S S Nr.280 (40/19) Maerz 1940 Nord/ A CN NN TNNANN The regular air traffic between Europe and/or South America, which was only established in 1939, is currently limited to the Pan-american-Airways route, which runs from Baltimore via Horta (Azoren) to Lisbon. The intercontinental landing on the British Bermuda islands was abandoned in mid-Maerz l940 and thus the control of the air mail carried out by the English side also stopped there. Before the war, the American transatlantic route reached Mar- seilley where it was connected to the European air network. Pan-American Airways had to move its European terminal to Lisbon. From the same Grun- de, the l939 organized, significantly shorter noerdal transatlantic route from Canada and New York to England was discontinued. The connection of the European routes to the Transocean line is currently ensured by the French company Air France through its London-Paris-Marseille-Oran-Lisbon line and by the Italian company Ala Littoria through its Rome-Lissabon line. On the American side, the Baltimore-New York line of the Pan-imeri- can airways connects to the American air network. The flight connection between Europe and South America is established: a.) through the Toulouse-Marseiile-Oran-Casablanca-Dakar-Natal-San-tiago de Chile's "Air France", which is the oldest Transocean route in the world. b.) The line of the newly established Italian transcontinental airline "LATi", which runs from Rome via the Spanish airports Malaga and Villa Cisneros and via the Portuguese island of Sal (group of Cape Verde Islands) to the Brazilian capital Rio de Janeiro, was established in February 1940.
