E :G.E O P R E S S Nr.313(4052) July 1940 THE PREPARATION OF THE BAGDADBAHN. On July 15, 194O, the opening of the Iraqi section of the Tel Kotschek-Mosul-Baidschi railway was inaugurated. The railway, originally under construction with German capital since l9o3, was connected to the Anatolian railway in Konia and was completed until World War II until Nisibin. In addition, the Baghdad-Samarra route was built: After the English completed the Basra-Bagdad route (and a little later the Samarra-Baiji line) in World War II, only the short Syrian route Nisibin-Tel Kotschek was built in the next two years. Only recently the government of Iraq went to the completion of the missing intersection. With the construction of this 24oö km long railway line, a direct connection between Europe and the Persian Gulf is now established, only through the Strait of the Bosphorus: at Istanbul, land connection between the Persian and Europe is interrupted. The Turkish railway, which was vigorously operated in recent years, gave the Baghdad Railway a new main line over Ankara, as well as several connections to the Turkish seaports. Since the end of l939, the railway also has a connection via Erserum to the Caucasian Soviet Republics and Iran; on the other hand, through the Hejas Railway, which branches off at Aleppo, there is also a connection to Egypt. Explanation of the sign: l= Baghdad Railway and connecting Treçke to Europe. fo 2= other tracks. (GEOPRESS.) : .
