- 16 - to have to undertake business trips abroad in order to seek permission to leave the country and were also supported by official economic bodies (Reichsprotector and Protectorate Government), there is a suspicion that they are in the service of the Czech resistance movement. It is remarkable that many Czechs were able to identify themselves with highly dubious political attitudes with recommendations from German offices. Thus, the confidant and co-worker of General G a j d a , the former consul Dr. L o - c h e r was twice abroad (among others in Yugoslavia and Turkey) and did not return. Various facts point to the fact that he carried out a political mission on these trips abroad and - probably in the connection of Gajda and also Beran to Osusky was very easily active. He was equipped with official letters, which attested the economic necessity of his trip. In recent years, however, certificates issued for the purpose of travelling abroad have been supplemented by "subject to state police authorisation", thus transferring responsibility to the State Police. In addition to such "communal journeys" by individuals and small firms, the Czech resistance movement and its links with other countries are supported by Czech civil servants in the state service. In particular, officials of the protectorate railways often misuse their position for such purposes. In the same sense, officials of the Protectorate's Office operate. An example for many shows the practical implementation: The Czech postal officer Jan Ž á č e k_ from Brno, station post office, smuggled a package from the Protectorate to Slovakia in June and gave it up in Kuty, because the package seemed suspicious to the local postal officer F r a n z, it sent it to the censorship office in Bratislava, whereupon an arrest order was issued immediately against the sender and the Slovak gendarmerie in Kuty took the search for it. According to the postal official Franz, suspicious parcels and letters come from the Pro- 17 in a similar way.
