The Committee discussed political and economic issues and was in contact with London's government. In close cooperation with the National Committee was the Czechoslovak Red Cross, the Czecho-Slovak travel agency "Čedok" and the Parisian "Sokol". Within the National Commission, three circles gradually formed in Paris, some of which worked against each other. During the circle, which was grouped around the former correspondent of the "České Slovo", the Jews L a n g s t e i n and the former correspondence of the Prague press in Berlin, K o l á ř, who represented the social democratic direction and was comparatively insignificant (this circle published the newspaper "Nouvelles tchecoslovaques"), the two other circles represent the forces working in emigration. Beneš's district was represented in Paris by Hubert R i p k a. The second circle, more right-wing, is mostly composed of former politicians of the Czechoslovak agricultural party and is represented by O s u s k y. Osusky was Beneš ́s opponent until his escape to London in Paris, as Beneš himself admits in a confidential letter. In this he explains, among other things: "With Paris, i.e.Osusky there is no perfect harmony. I do everything I can not to widen the dispute...... There and there Ten denzen show themselves to be different here to the left and to the right. The strongest incitement comes from K a h á n e k (Bucharest), who claims to be the emissary of B e r a n and also to be associated with this." The president of the Czech colony in Paris, Dr. F 1 a n d e r k a, was also close to Osusky's circle (which is very right-wing and is already discussing the new Czechoslcwakei in certain areas). The differences between the above-mentioned groups are at times very profound and show the typical manifestations of emigration. This makes it understandable why there is no uniform organisation of the Czechs abroad, former Czechoslovak Prime Minister Dr.Milan H o d ža , who had not been admitted to the National Committee by Beneš and Osusky, founded a "Czechoslovac National Council" on 28 January 1940 (Národní rada Československá - Conceil national tche- coslovaque). Diésem also stood General P r c h a l a na- he, who was completely shut off by the circles around Beneš and Ingr - 14 -
