25a Dr. von Bursgdorff Under-Secretary of State Prague, 9 October 1939. MOLLLN Mr. State Secretary The decision of whether a work of art should remain in the place for which it is made or is to be made accessible to a mast in a larger city museum is not a new issue. In itself, it will be absolutely right to leave works of art in the place they are created. This certainly applies to plastic works. Whether this Prinżip should necessarily be extended to paintings, seems doubtful to me. If the altar still exists in the Cistercian monastery of Hohenfort, for which the paintings are worked, then I would tend to the view that the paintings belong to it, because they are a part of the altar and, together with the altar, certainly work quite differently than 53988 detached from it. However, I do not think that this question needs to be decided at the moment. I propose that the paintings be restored in the museum and that the protectorate government do not buy the paintings, for example. The latter could be done by writing to the prime minister. I believe that this purchase by the protectorates government is absolutely necessary.
