St The Imperial Protector in Bohemia and Moravia Prague, October 4, 1939 No. XIV V-3-5 b V e r m e r k On September 27, the director of the "State Collection of Old Art" in Prague, Prof. Dr. Cibulka, in order to discuss the matter of the Hohenfurter Bilder, which is currently in this gallery, on the occasion of the letter from the Secretary of State to the Prime Minister dated 13 September, which was probably brought to his attention by the authorities. As a result, the undersigned was able to familiarize himself with the content of each letter and with that of the previous letter of the terminated job. The matter itself was known here for a long time due to meetings with some underrated German personalities. The following is to be reported: The 9 matching paintings of the "Master of Hohenfurt" (with representations from the history of the Saviour) are among the most valuable works from the beginnings of old German painting in general; they were worked around l35o by an unknown master as an altarpiece for the Cistercian monastery of Hohenfort in South Bohemia and remained in its possession, since a long time of course no longer in cultic use, but in a small monastery museun. Since last year, the paintings have been on loan from the monastery in the "State Collection of Old Art" at Marienplatz in Prague. On the one hand, in the agreement with the monastery, the desire has been decisive for the museum management to restore the panels in the museum's workshop, which have recently been damaged by overpaintings and other improper treatments, on the other hand, and probably even more the incentive to show before and after the restoration work these famous testimonies of ancient Bohemian art for a time much further circles than this is possible in the rather remote Hohenfurt. It is to be assumed that this is a matter for the public.
