Mr Prag, 16. 1 1963 Food and Agriculture Division VI-3946-2/43 t To Mr S taa t sss e k r e tä r : construction of potato storage halls. The significant increase in potato consumption required an expansion of storage in Prague and other major consumption centres last winter. Since the former warehouses of the potato distributors and the temporary warehouses in Prague were not sufficient, rents were made near the city, in which about 4 ooot potatoes were stored. As much as the potato rentals on the farm proved to be successful, the rental in this large framework is so difficult. On the basis of the experiences collected in winter, it seemed urgently appropriate to move away from the potato rental in the big cities and to move on to the construction of potato warehouses according to the model of the empire. Using the practical experience of the Empire, the Protectorate initially envisaged the construction of 4 warehouses in Prague and 1 warehouse each in Brno and Moravia- Ostrava with a total capacity of ll ooo t. The building plans have already been approved by the General Plenipotentiary for the construction industry and the start of the construction work for two warehouses in Prague and the halls in Brno and Moravia. Despite these commitments, the construction of the warehouses is seriously questioned, as it is not possible to maintain the necessary labour force. The halls have to be completed by the end of September. This is only possible if the buildings which have already been partially opened are continued in full immediately. The construction of the warehouses has become particularly urgent in recent times, as numerous cellars, previously used as potato warehouses, have been confiscated for air protection purposes and replacement warehouses have not been made available.
