This success, of course, is not only to be thanked for the measures of the war finance policy. We have by far not taken advantage of the possibilities available to this extent. We have not created any new war taxes other than the military surcharges and the consumption of tobacco, beer, sparkling wine and spirits, in fact we have even abolished the multi-income tax introduced in 1939, which has brought us a yield of several million RM. The 27 billion RM Reichssteuer, which we brought in in 1940, is not even the peak of the development. For 1941 we expect about 30 billion Rm. In this sum, however, about 5 Miiliarden RM state and municipal taxes and 6.6 billion RMS social security contributions are not yet available. From this one may recognize the extraordinary tax power of the German economy. And even these large sums do not exhaust the total freed purchasing power of individual economies. This is demonstrated by the smooth satisfaction of the credit demand, which naturally increased sharply with the war, and the savings deposits rose to 19.8 billion RM by the beginning of the war. Since then, they have continued to rise to RM 27.4 billion by the end of 1940. However, the favourable position of the credit market would not have been achieved if all public debt had not maintained a healthy relationship to the ordinary revenues of the Reich's financial economy and to the amount of the German national income.
