Following the above letter, Dr. Ignaz J a n k u was in Datschitz for about 6 years before he took up his duties at the Landesbehörde in Brno in mid-April 1939. Initially, he openly confessed to Germanism, but later, obviously, out of fear of losing his post, he was strictly in accordance with Czech regulations. As an official, he should always have behaved very correctly by following the exact wording of all regulations, however, there were often differences with the German population of the district of Datschitz/Zlabings, which blamed him for his correct behaviour. The Czechs, however, presented him with the best material and named him one of the most capable officials of the dor- tige district office. Despite this behaviour as an official of the Czech state, St. must always have remained a German within. This is also demonstrated by his efforts to be transferred to a purely German region.
