33 - 2 - the group of former Austrian officers, on the other hand, has shown a steady equality towards all things, partly it is Czech and has been strengthened for years in its German hatred. The legionary group within the officer corps of the government force must be rejected politically. The clearly anti-rich attitude of the governmental force is best illustrated by an incident which is likely to be of major importance in the context of the case of the former Prime Minister. The General Inspector of the Government Force, General Em i n - g e r , had, on behalf of the then Prime Minister of the Protectorate Government of Elias in July 194l, called on the Chief of Staff of the Wehrmacht authorised to increase the staff of the government force. Eminger had stated that the OKW could then have its troops in the Protectorate more appropriate, that is to say use outside the Protectorates; this request was rejected. To what extent Eminger was initiated into the background, which had led to this request, was not known so far. After all, it should be stressed that Eminger spoke to Elias almost daily. Their attitude towards the Czech legionaries is characteristic of the entire attitude of the government force; their position has not been cut yet. Within the government force there are 258 officers - non-legionaries 22 officers - legionaries, 2 generals, 4 colonels, 5 lieutenant colonel and ll majors. Among the military officials and civilian employees there are another 48 former legionaires. The reasons for the legionaries in the government force are to be described as decisive, especially in a - 3 -
