7Q / lenient and successful acknowledgment found to have been certain. For a long time he had long desired that the city, which first paved the way for him and his endeavours, be able to seek again. Now he deeply moved the opportunity to give his thanks for so many signs of gracious acclaim. In November of the same year Wagner was again in Prague, at a performance of the "Fliegen Dutchman" and at a second concert he conducted, the subject of warm enthusiasm. The joyous reception that Prague had brought to the Master in the years of the warful enforcement of his ideas and his creations proved itself in the next few years in the performances of the "Mastersinger", with which the New German Theatre was opened in January 1888, and the "Rings" (Ring). The city, which Mozart had given so much of sustained enthusiasm and warm understanding, stood with its enthusiastic departure to Wagner's artistic goals and with its ready-to-do promotion of his work in the first row of the music and theatre cities that came up for the new German music drama. The "Mozart City" of Prague can also claim the honorary title of "Richard Wagner City". For she has already proved to the living master that the German spirit of her history and culture has the vastness of deep feeling to comprehend the great polar tension between Mozart's operatic form and Richard Wagner's musical and dramatic overall work of art. But the present has also to prove worthy of this music and theatre-historically significant German achievement of Prague and to manage this heritage fruitfully. HermanN L.MayeR
