- 3 - The book trade in its historical development. l. The k. k. Schulbücher-Verlag. The unconditional supremacy of Vienna had a particularly sharp impact on the German school book trade. For many years, the school books publishing house in Vienna was a monopoly, but even after its break-through, almost all the important school books publishers concentrated in the metropolis of the old double monarchy. Schulbuch-Verlag in Prague had already acquired a central position in the last century of the present capital of Czechoslovakia, which remained largely after the war. It soon became clear that the most cheap production of the necessary textbooks would require not only the texts but also a corresponding institution to be published. Thus, the school fund, which had to cover the first production costs, was looking for a printing privilege.
