74a - 2 - Question with Prof. Zatschek to learn everything that inter- ested him. Asked about his education, St. expressed himself that he had completed both the commercial college and studied theology, and that he also gained a certain reputation as an autodidact in mineralogical circles. His propensity and his tendency to science made it seem desirable to him in the university library to address a position as a scientist. Dr. Hrozný expressed his regret that the payment of RM 5o.- was so yämmedich and bad and referred to the outdated provisions of the Czech government in this regard. He also said that he could not imagine how St. could live with such an income at all, St. replied that he was lucky enough to be supported by his mother and so could calm his scientific inclinations, which Dr. H. apparently accepted without pleasure, but with signs of utter calming. Dr.H. during the whole conversation proved to be a perfect diplomat and it would be a pleasure under other circumstances to speak to such a spirited person. H- did not ask a single question. The building up of his conversation was always such that he took a break, in which the other part naturally had to say the expected results, so to speak. However, Dr.H. had no luck and experienced almost nothing. This caused him to suddenly appear as a benefactor to Pg.St. and to open up the possibilities for him to arrive at a better agreement. He told him that he would be willing to introduce him to the Ministerial Councillor Hrdina with responsibility for the Ministry of Education. On this occasion, Pg.St. could easily assert that, at least on the basis of his secondary education, he would receive a post as a systemized official of the University Library, which would also provide him with a very good opportunity to ascend. St. Dr. Hrozný replied that he was very grateful to him for his efforts, but today he was still a much 24 too big newcomer, in order to make any decisions, because he was in the first place concerned with his scientific training and the possibility of working. 19979 aopT
