Section VI - Food and Agriculture - for the period from 1.8.-15.8.1943 Agriculture During the period under review there was a favourable harvest weather which made it possible to harvest quickly and smoothly. A perceptible shortage of labour has occurred many times in larger farms, especially where, as a result of the pronounced drought, the maturity of the various varieties has occurred briefly or even at the same time. In order to maintain the work ethic, severe punishment is considered necessary in the event of a refusal to work. The process of harvesting was sometimes delayed by extremely heavy thunderstorms. The dry areas in northern Bohemia and northern Moravia did not show any improvement in the field population even during the reporting period. In these areas, there is an extreme need for fodder, which was initially only met by the increased removal of slaughter cattle. It is planned to provide further relief in the hay and fodder cereals levy and, if possible, to allocate feed. In the higher areas, the harvest runs normally. Special damage due to dryness can be seen in all vegetable species and also in fruit. In the case of vegetables, there is also a markedly strong pest infestation. Potatoes and beets have also suffered from dryness in the lowlands. Sugar beets show a low percentage of leaves, the sugar content is above the average. With the harvesting the Drusch also started. Up to now considerable grain deliveries to the warehouses and shoppers can be observed, without saying anything final about delivery standards and quantity. The recording of the oil fruits is normal.
