81 The activity of the Vienna Institute for Economic Research, affiliated with the South-East Europe Society, was divided into 1. in such research work, which specifically tried to clarify Viennese problems with or without connection with the South East, as well as in those - according to the institute's special South-East Research Mission - dealing with the economic plans of South-Eastern Europe and German-South European cooperation; and 2. In the course of the past year of activity, the latter were in the first place in terms of their practical importance. These include the following major cases: Import requirements and self-sufficiency of the south-east countries, import requirements and the self-supply of Turkey Change in the capacity of the South-East markets Romania and Yugoslavia The expected development of the Vienna port envelope I The decline in the cost of living and wages in Vienna since reunification The anticipated development of Vienna's port envelope II - response to the opinion of the Reichsstelle für Spatschaft. All these works are fundamental representations of the problems involved with extensive statistical documents. The two works on the harbour envelope appeared in the series of writings of the Southern Eastern Europe Society and were sent in numbered copies to a number of selected inscriptions only for use in the service. The work on the development of living costs and wages was treated as a "secret matter of the Reich" and was only followed in person. The works on Romania and Yugoslavia as well as on import requirements and a selected group of persons were sent out in strict confidence. - 2 -
