JULY 1943 1/62 To the rector of the German Karls University 101 Ch by the dean of the philosophical faculty of Prague Mr. Hönsch came to me some time before the examination and asked me to confine him to the testing area because he had to move in and because of his work at the Reichsprotector he had found little time to study. I replied to him that it was impossible to narrow down because Reich regulations were in place and the examination was held before a commission whose members could also ask questions. I was then surprised, however, that he dared to go to the examination because he had only attended the old High German seminar for a few hours. In fact, the examination regulation explicitly states that semi-nares are prescribed. So far, in 8 years of examination practice, it has occurred to me once that a seminar on a new language to be learned - and this is Old High German or Old Norse - has been learned from its own discretion for the examination. I dismissed Mr Hönsch by admonishing him to carry out what he lacked in order to pass the examination. Moreover, it was up to the chairman of the examination committee to decide whether he would be admitted. 4 The examination was completely inadequate, although he left the examination room for a full 25 minutes. I have expressly addressed this fact to the chairman of the oral examination, Prof. Dr. Wostry, and I told the Commission that Mr Hönsch's grammatical knowledge was so scandalous that he could not be admitted to the oral exam. The purpose of the exam is to make admission to the oral examination conditional on it. Now the examination regulations provide that a diarrhea in the main subject leads to the invalidation of the whole examination.
