34 Excerpt from Mr. Tostmann's letter dated 15.12.1939 to Mr. Reichsprotektor in Böhaen and Kähren, Group Commercial Economy. e.g. by Mr. Heg.Council Dr. Stier about Mr. Dr. Bayer, P r ag. para. 3./ It had to also be sought to remove the Jewish tenants from our houses. At mei- ner car rental, l68 apartments were inhabited by Jews. There was a danger that if all Jews were immediately dismissed, part of the cooperative's homes would be empty and that the cooperative would suffer considerable damage. Therefore, I discussed this matter with Mr. Reg. Kat Ludwig, Gruppe Gewerbliche Wirtschaft beim Reichsprotektor, 2./ Herrr Reg.Assessor Wesely bei Herrn Oberlandrat, 3./ Herr Reg. Rat Kolitz bei der Geheimen Staatspolizei. All three gentlemen explained to me that I have no consideration for this, but that all Jews must be terminated without notice and that they should be given an appointment of departure until the 3l. This is what has happened. Of the 168 abandoned Jewish neighbourhoods, as well as of the 82 vacant apartments taken over by nir, Bö apartments have now been reoccupied. There are now 88 flats empty. Some of them are already rented for today / 15.X11./ against 1.1.1940. It is to be expected that the other apartments will also be occupied within one to two months. Apart from the loss of rent due to empty apartments, the cooperative has incurred expenses due to the termination of the Jewish tenants inasmuch as the apartments were handed over almost consistently in an indecent condition and had to be renovated and detangled. These losses may be partly offset by the fact that the costs incurred are offset against the usual rents so far. Despite this, considerable damage is caused by the political situation. S801F 246
