159 Curriculum vitae of Wilhelm Chr. Harmening Born 9.6.19l2 in Minden/Westphalia, I studied German literature, Phi=losophie, theatre=, music= and newspaper studies after completing my studies at the University of Berlin as a freelance writer and theatre=criticist, besides= I worked at the completion of my dissertation. The doctorate planned by Professor Petersen was no longer possible in the wake of his illness and his later death. For almost 2 years, the work has been with Mr. Pro= fessor Niessen in Cologne, who, despite various reminders, has always comforted me for my overburden. I hope, however, that the oral doctor=examination, as soon as my time allows me to leave. I first acquired my knowledge in the field of publishing at the theater=publisher Albert Langen=Georg Müller, later I was employed by the publisher Steiniger and then at the Deutsche Ver=. He also worked at the Deutsche Arbeitsfront publishing house and the Führer's representative for the supervision of the entire intellectual and philosophical training and education of the NSDAP, Office of Written Studies, as well as as as a freelancer in some newspapers and magazines. In June l940 I was then sent to Belgium on behalf of the Reichsver= bandes der deutschen Zeitungs= und Zeitschriften=Veröffentlicher for the organization of the German book distribution, where I took over the management of the various book departments of the Agence Dechenne and built them up according to completely new aspects for the conditions there; moreover I founded a publishing department, which worked both culturally and economically extremely successfully. At the beginning of 1994 I was taken over by the German Information Office of the Federal Foreign Office as a publishing specialist and entrusted with the construction of Walloon and Flemish publishing houses= and sales= companies. However, since writing=tumspolitik responsibilities were urgently to be fulfilled in the south-east region, I was transferred to Belgrade in June 1994l. There I moved among other things the publishing= and distribution=A.G. South-East and the Propaganda=Verlag=Verband Prosvetna Zajednica A.G.. In hardly a year's time, I succeeded in expanding the publishing house= and sales=A. G. South-east (Serbian: Jugoistok) into one of the most active and successful publishing houses= and distribution companies in the South-Eastern region. The further expansion planned in the most generous form, for which the basis had already been created in laborious small work, failed due to inconsistencies with the head of the Deutsches Ínformationsstelle, Mr. Klatten. Both in Serbia and in other Balkan countries, as well as in Belgium, Holland and, in some cases, in France, I have established a close connection with many relevant personalities, which is quite fruitful for the literary work.
